Make Your Home Safer – 2

Last month we discussed several ways to make your home safer and possibly cut down on insurance costs and usage. This month we continue with more ways to make your home safer.

Be Careful About Vacations. Everyone needs to get away every once in a while. It’s important to rest and recuperate from everyday struggles and toils. But you need to be smart about it. Don’t advertise that you’re going to be away from home for an extended period of time. You never know who is reading those Facebook posts about the fabulous vacation you’re leaving on in just a couple of days. Also, be sure someone is picking up your newspaper and mail. Don’t let them pile up. Nothing says ‘Come on in’ to someone looking for a house to rob than several days of newspapers in the driveway.

Hide Your Valuables Creatively. In this day of sharing everything with all your ‘friends,’ you should be creative in keeping those unwanted ‘friends’ from stealing you blind. One suggestion is to keep your shades closed so people can’t see all of those neat things you own. Also, don’t keep valuables in the expected places. Burglars look in places like closets, bedside tables, and dresser drawers for things to take. They’re usually in a hurry and will grab those things that are either easily found or in plain sight.

Stay Alert. So many people today walk around focused on their phones and not on their surroundings. Take a minute and look around you when you’re approaching your home. Where are the places someone could be hiding, waiting on you? How well-lighted is your typical approach at night? Who’s walking or driving around the neighborhood you don’t know? Is there someone standing at the end of the block watching you? Be alert!

Buy Smoke Detectors. Not only buy them, check them at least quarterly. Change the batteries on a regular basis.

Practice Fire Safety. Have an escape plan for every room in your home. It needs to have at least two escape routes in case one is blocked by fire or smoke. Designate a specific place near your home for everyone to gather and be sure everyone knows where it is. Teach your children how to use matches, other fire starters, the burners on the stove, and how not to catch things on fire. Everyone should watch videos of how fast a house can burn. It’s a good idea to have a fire extinguisher in the home and for everyone to know how to use it.
